Spaceflight Simulator is the one game on this site where reading the numbers matters. You assemble a rocket from tanks, engines, separators and capsules, then launch it and watch physics decide whether your design was any good. Orbit is not given to you. How to Play Spaceflight Simulator
The build screen is drag and drop. Pick a capsule, put a fuel tank underneath, put an engine under that. Separators go between stages so you can drop empty tanks. Once you press launch, the arrow keys (or the on-screen buttons on mobile) tilt the rocket, and the throttle controls thrust. A staging button fires the next separator when you are ready.
The map view is your friend. It shows your predicted path as a line, so you can see whether you are heading for orbit, for a crash, or for an escape trajectory long before it happens. Switch to it often during a flight, especially in the minute after the engines cut, because that is when you find out whether the plan worked.
The Parts You Actually Need
Capsule: one, at the top. Fuel tanks: the bigger the tank, the more fuel and the more weight. Engines: each has a thrust figure and a fuel consumption figure, and the ratio between those and the mass above the engine decides whether the rocket climbs briskly or crawls. Separators: cheap and light, and the single most useful part in the list. Legs, parachutes and fairings come later, once you are trying to land or carry a payload.
Ignore the exotic parts on your first few builds. A capsule, two tank-and-engine blocks with a separator between them, and nothing else, will reach orbit if flown well. Adding parts before you can fly the simple rocket only adds ways to fail.
Getting to Orbit
Go straight up for the first few kilometres, then start tilting gradually towards the horizon. The mistake almost everyone makes is tilting too late and too hard. A slow, continuous tilt uses far less fuel than climbing high and then trying to build sideways speed from nothing. By the time the first stage is empty you should be leaning noticeably; by the end of the second stage you should be almost flat.
When the path line on the map wraps all the way round the planet without touching it, you are in orbit. Cut the engine and enjoy it for a moment. If the line touches the planet on one side, you need a little more sideways speed at the highest point of the arc; a short burn there, pointed along the direction of travel, usually fixes it.
Staging and Fuel
Carrying empty tanks is dead weight. Put a separator between every tank-and-engine block and stage the moment a tank runs dry. Two or three modest stages beat one enormous one, even though the big one looks more impressive on the pad. Watch the fuel gauge rather than guessing; the game shows it clearly.
Throttle matters too. Full throttle from the pad is fine in the thick lower air, but once the rocket is moving quickly and the air is thin, easing off slightly can extend the burn without losing much speed. Experiment; the map line tells you immediately whether a change helped.
Spaceflight Simulator Tips
Test small before going big. A short rocket that reaches ten kilometres teaches you how the controls feel without wasting a long build. Add a stage only after the previous version flew cleanly.
Keep the rocket symmetrical. Side boosters on one side only will spin the rocket, and no amount of steering fixes that once it starts. If you add boosters, add them in pairs.
Landing is harder than launching. Slow down early, keep the engine pointed down, and expect a few crashes. Legs on the bottom of the lander help more than they look like they should, and a parachute for planets with air removes most of the guesswork.
Save every design that flies. The build screen has a save option, and having a known-good orbital rocket to fall back on means experiments never cost you the ability to get to space.
Missions Worth Trying
In rough order of difficulty: reach 10 km, reach orbit, land back on the launch planet, reach the moon and return, land on the moon, then go further out. Each one needs a slightly different rocket, which is where most of the replay value comes from.
The moon trip is the natural next goal after orbit. From a stable orbit, burn along your direction of travel until the map line stretches out to cross the moon's path, then coast. Timing the burn so the moon is where the line ends when you arrive is the whole puzzle, and getting it right the first time is rare. Watch the map, adjust, and try again.
Reading the Map Line
The predicted path updates live while the engine runs, so you can steer by the line rather than by feel. If the line is getting longer and rounder, you are adding orbital speed. If it is getting taller and narrower, you are mostly adding height, which is only useful early. If it starts to bend the wrong way, you are pointed against your motion and should stop burning immediately.
A First Orbital Rocket That Works
If you want a design to copy: capsule on top, a medium tank under it with a small engine, a separator, then a large tank with a large engine at the bottom. Launch at full throttle, begin tilting at about two kilometres, stage when the bottom tank empties, and keep tilting until the second stage is nearly horizontal. Cut the engine when the map line closes. It is not efficient, but it is forgiving, and it will get you to orbit on the second or third try while you learn the feel of the controls.
Mobile Play
The browser version runs on phones with touch buttons for steering, throttle and staging. Flying is perfectly workable. Building is fiddly on a small screen because the parts are small and need precise placement, so if you have the choice, build on a desktop and fly wherever you like.
